Developing autonomy for university students: Some theoretical issues

Abstract: Autonomy is considered one of the crucial skills for university students to enhance the quality and outcomes of their learning. This capability is not an inherent trait but is developed within the educational environment where policies, resources, curricula, and teaching methods aim to foster autonomy. It is manifested through metacognitive skills, cognitive skills, and social-emotional skills. Thereby, the article proposes suggestions to improve students' autonomy.
