Policies for attracting and retaining talent in journalism and communication

Abstract: Vietnamese journalism and communication are facing challenges in attracting and retaining talent, as high-quality human resources are unevenly distributed, concentrated mainly in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. In localities, low salaries and a lack of creative environments have led many reporters and editors to leave the profession. Meanwhile, a 2024 survey by the Institute of Journalism and Communication revealed that only 37% of journalists felt confident using digital tools, creating difficulties in meeting multitasking demands. Furthermore, the digital era (with AI, big data, and deepfakes) requires modern journalists to master technology, engage in cross-platform storytelling, and uphold professional ethics. This article proposes a comprehensive set of solutions: flexible salary and reward mechanisms, linking training–utilization–professional development, establishing criteria for modern journalism talent, and fostering a working environment that encourages creativity. Only then can Vietnamese journalism build a sustainable pool of talent, ready for integration and capable of fulfilling its role of guiding society in the digital age.
